The traditional Chinese medicine divides a women menstrual cycle into 4 phrases
1. The yin phrase or the follicular phrase
According TCM) In this phrase, after menstruation, yang (progesterone) and yin (estrogen) are harmonized at the lowest level and prepare for the rise of ying to start another menstrual cycle. As the yin rise, the brain signals the uterus to produce certain substances, the ovarian to select a dominant egg to be extruded into the Fallopian tube and uterine lining to become thickening enough to encourage the natural process of egg implantation. 2. The Ovulation phase

In this phrase qi and blood move downward to promote the implantation of the egg and nourish the uterus to support the growth of embryos. 3. The yang or luteal phrase
The yang phase also is referred to day after ovulation to the day before period. 4. The menstruation phrase
If there is no fertilized egg produced, then the liver converts the yang energy back to yin, blood and qi move downward again, resulting in the drop of body temperature and the uterine lining prepares to shed for menstruation,phrase.
5. The blood phrase
As the ying and yang fall, the menstrual period begins as the uterine lining is shed through the vagina and the body temperature is dropped to prepare for the rise of yin energy. The blood and qi continue to move downward, if there is any stagnation, it may cause menstruation cramps and pain. Some Chinese practitioners group the 4 and 5 phrases together and name them as menstruation phrase.
